The typical suspension system comprises a controlling arm, coil spring, and either a shock absorber or a strut. While a shock primarily dampens movement, a strut additionally supports the car's weight. Often, the spring is mounted on the strut. When either the strut or spring compresses, the wheel moves upward toward the car's body. A coilover operates on a similar principle, with a longer coil spring coiled around the strut. In this system, both the shock and spring compress during wheel movement, with the spring bearing the weight upon compression and the strut damping bouncing motion.
