The midpipe, located between the muffler and the catalytic converter, plays a crucial role in exhaust system performance. It is available in either a single or dual exhaust pipe configuration, designed to optimize torque output, increase horsepower, and enhance exhaust notes.
There are two common types of midpipes: H-Pipe and X-Pipe. An H-Pipe forms the shape of an 'H' and connects two exhaust pipes with a smaller pipe in between. Conversely, an X-Pipe is shaped like an 'X', where both exhaust streams briefly merge before separating again.
H-Pipes generally produce a deeper sound and generate extra torque in the lower RPM range, while X-Pipes offer a higher exhaust note and more power in the high RPM range. In cases where a vehicle only supports a Y-pipe, converting to a dual setup is recommended for achieving maximum horsepower. Upgrading to an X or H setup allows for increased airflow, providing more room to accommodate boosts in horsepower and torque while reducing excessive back-pressure.
